Research Internships in Arthropod Biodiversity and Conservation

Two positions open, beginning February 2009 at the Archbold
Biological Station, Florida. Goal of research is to document
distribution of 70+ species of arthropods restricted to Florida scrub
habitat at 20+ preserves of various sizes. We will attempt to assess the
adequacy of this system of habitat preserves for protecting specialized
invertebrates. Sites are on the Lake Wales Ridge, an area of unusually
high endemism in Florida. No specialized training required, but must
have ability to learn to distinguish between arthropod species.
Necessary "parataxonomist" training provided. Entomological enthusiasm
an asset. Interns working on this project will be given opportunities to
spin off an independent project dealing with some aspect of the study.
Must be able to drive between sites, and endure hot conditions from May
onward. Internships extend 6-8 months, with some flexibility on starting
date and duration.
