Job Summary: This position functions to expand upon and improve the
scientific capabilities of the National Park Service (NPS) at Acadia
National Park (ACAD) in collaboration with the park’s Schoodic Education
and Research Center (SERC). SERC is a NPS sponsored public-private
partnership linking scientists, students, citizens, and businesses to
promote understanding and stewardship of the park and region’s natural
and cultural resources. Acadia Partners for Science and Learning (APSL)
is the park’s non-profit organization supporting scientific research and
natural sciences education at SERC. They manage the SERC campus
facilities, fund and support park research, and sponsor a variety of
scientific literacy programs for educators, students, and the public.
This position will champion a broad science program to assist the NPS
with its applied conservation science needs at ACAD. The incumbent will
not conduct research themselves, but instead facilitate and coordinate
the research and science activities of others. He/she will establish
close relationships with scientists and students at universities,
agencies, and other organizations to identify, prioritize and implement
research and long-term resource monitoring projects at the park. The
employee will review research proposals, draft science funding
proposals, issue research permits, coordinate with scientists working in
the park, write reports, organize natural resource inventory and
monitoring activities, manage the park’s scientific reference library,
oversee science contracts and administer a small research grants
program, and assist in the translation of research results for
non-scientific audiences. The incumbent will work directly for the
park’s Chief of Resource Management.
Major Duties:
Help to facilitate the development of a strategic science program for
the park.
Advocate and market the park’s research and monitoring needs to the
scientific community.
Serve as the park liaison for researchers and students conducting
studies and other science activities in the park.
Administer L.L. Bean Acadia Research Fellowship, Schoodic Research
Fellowship and other research grant programs.
Write and review funding proposals to address important park science needs.
Coordinate park bio-blitzes and other inventory and monitoring activities.
Serve as the NPS technical representative for contracted science
projects or activities.
Facilitate the translation of research results for the NPS, its partner
organizations, local residents, and park visitors.
Oversee annual update to the park’s resource management bibliography and
research opportunities catalog.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to champion an interdisciplinary natural and cultural resource
and social science program to meet current and future inventory,
monitoring, and research needs at the park. (Program advocacy)
Experience administering a large and complex conservation focused
science program, including goal setting, budgeting, tracking program
funds, preparing scopes of work, overseeing contracts, grant writing,
issuing permits. (Program management).
Experience conducting conservation focused research and/or long-term
monitoring and in applying the broad application of scientific
principles to the protection of natural and cultural resources. (Science

Experience working with diverse people and organizations, both
professional and students, to accomplish science goals and objectives.
