Dear list, I've just returned from a three week trip to Madagascar and South Africa; my first ever visit to the continent. I loved it (especially Madagascar), and now all I can think about is how to go back to see more of the continent. It occurred to me that one way of doing this legitimately would be to develop some research projects, but it's hard to know where to start. I have never spun the globe and picked a random spot to study before, and I'd imagine this is not a method most people employ in developing research programs in remote (from some home base) areas. So, my questions to the group are these: 1.) if you have ongoing (or past) research projects in locations far away from where you are based, how did you get started? That is, what made you pick the particular location and study system that you did? I am especially interested in hearing from people who just had a general interest in the area and who didn't have a lot of prior knowledge, but other perspectives are welcome too. 2.) What are the funding agencies that might be interested in supporting ecological research in Africa? Aside from formal funding bodies, who or what (agencies/centers) might support someone with an interest in working in Africa? I guess I'll leave it at that for now. If anyone actually responds (off-list might be best), I'm sure I'll come up with more questions. Thanks very much. Lauren Quinn
