Vince Voegeli Research Projects Manager Forestry Field Technician Dates: approximately 6/15/09 - 8/30/09 Position Description: The Yellowstone Ecological Research Center is searching for four qualified field technicians to sample forestry plots during the summer of 2009. Interns will work with research scientists to collect and process field data for the validation of remote sensing data products including foliar biomass, canopy fire fuels, and forest structure. The technicians will gain experience in plant identification, standard forest measurement practices, Geographic Information Systems, GPS, and data organization. Research will be conducted in Yellowstone National Park, Glacier National Park, and the Big Sky, Montana region. Background Requirements: Applicants should have the following: sophomore through graduate level education, interest in forest ecology, coursework in ecology and/or environmental science, strong outdoor skills, and a positive attitude. Specific job duties will be dependent on coursework and experience. Camping will be required, so applicants should have backcountry experience as well as basic camping gear. An ability to work in high altitude environments and hike several miles through steep terrain is a necessity. Interns must be able to work well as a team to accomplish these field-intensive tasks. Excellent communication skills will be essential to create a positive team environment and also communicate effectively with research scientists in and out of the field. Compensation: Stipend/pay of $1200 - $1500/month depending on experience and skill level (prorated for partial months).
