OUTREACH AND DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS

Reporting to the Director and responsible for facilitating and advancing
educational, outreach and development activities at the Forest. Assists with
the general management of the Harvard Forest with specific responsibilities
for activities involving Harvard and other university faculty, students and
groups; Harvard Forest supporters and funders; professional societies and
grantors; and national, regional and local audiences.
Responsibilities
Outreach
Advance educational and research connections between Harvard Forest and
relevant departments across Harvard University, including: establish and
advertise pathways for the initiation of new faculty and student research
projects based at the Forest; facilitate and coordinate field trips by
Cambridge-based courses to the Forest; facilitate symposia, workshops, and
retreats organized by related university faculty, students and departments
at the Forest; participate in Harvard Forest education including the
Freshman Seminars, Summer Research program and summer and short courses.
Facilitate educational programming and provide assistance to visiting
undergraduate and graduate students and relevant professional groups. Work
with Schoolyard Coordinator (SC) who conducts educational programs for K-12
classes and coordinates activities of museum volunteers. With SC,
coordinate activities of the Fisher Museum and associated trails and field
sites.
Work with HF scientists to synthesize and distill research findings into
language and formats that are accessible and compelling to conservation
organizations and public policymakers. Develop strategic relationships with
external organizations to foster the use and application of HF science to
relevant conservation efforts in order to expand the broader impact of HF
research. Organize meetings and events to facilitate direct information
exchange between HF scientists, conservation groups and policymakers.
Serve as a general information resource about: the Harvard Forest, its
current science, conservation and educational activities and history; and
local, Massachusetts and New England ecology, conservation and forestry.
Represent the Harvard Forest at University activities and at conferences and
symposia especially in the areas of ecology and conservation.
Be a primary liaison with local, statewide and regional communities,
governments and conservation organizations.
Development
Research and pursue fundraising opportunities to support the research,
educational, outreach and conservation mission of the Harvard Forest,
including developing contacts, writing solicitation letters and grant
proposals, and tracking results and writing grant reports. Assist Harvard
Forest staff in identifying, applying for and obtaining funding from outside
sources and organizations.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications: BA/BS in ecology, conservation biology or closely
related field.
Additional Requirements: Masters degree in ecology, conservation biology or
closely related field preferred. 3 years experience in development
preferred. Demonstrated experience in print and web-based writing skills
for scientific and general audiences and the media. Demonstrated experience
in public speaking and managing multiple complex projects simultaneously
required. Able to build collaborative relations with a wide variety of
internal and external faculty, undergraduates and researchers. Excellent
organizational skills. Frequent travel between Petersham and Cambridge and
occasional travel to regional and national meetings. Occasional night and
weekend hours required as needed. Valid driver's license required.

Harvard Forest
Harvard Forest, an internationally recognized center for basic and applied
research in ecology, conservation and ecosystem studies, with 40 full-time
staff is one of 26 Long Term Ecological Research sites across the country
sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The Forest facilities include
a research and administrative complex, 3500 acres of land, and residential
