Spend 6‐18 months in Central Nevada working at the California National
Historic Trail Interpretive Center in Elko, NV developing interpretive
programs surrounding the California Trail experience and its related themes
for the general public. The position will contribute to the appreciation and
preservation of historic and cultural sites and work to forge strong
community partnerships and enhance sustainable tourism in the region. This
is a great opportunity to gain experience in the field of interpretation by
helping to establish programs and implement the exhibit plan at this brand
new facility.

Compensation:
This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living stipend
of $9,557 for the initial 6‐month period. This is not an hourly wage or a
salary and is paid to members bi - weekly throughout the 6‐month period.
Upon completion of AmeriCorps service, members shall receive an additional
education award in the amount of $2,362 that can be used for paying off
student loans, or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.
Additional benefits include paid health care coverage and paid trainings.

Timeline: March 30, 2009 – September 30, 2009 (this position may be extended
for an additional 12 months based on performance evaluations and funding).

Description:
Research, review, and assist with the implementation of the Trail Center
exhibit plan. Assist with all aspects of daily Trail Center operations and
developing standard operating procedures. Assist with events planning.
Develop and present interpretive programs to a variety of audiences
including first and third person living history, guided walks, and
environmental education programs. Assist with volunteer coordination. Assist
with graphic design and development of Brochures and site bulletins.

Skills Required:
Knowledge of, or interest in American history, historic research, and
pioneer skills and crafts. Must be a skilled communicator with a knowledge
of, or interest in, interpretive techniques. Knowledge of graphic design.
Must enjoy working with children and adults. A Background check is required
for this position.

Training: Trail Center staff will provide interpretive training and
guidance. Safety, CPR, First Aid, and IT security training is mandatory.
Training will be provided in the BLM’s and AmeriCorps’ mission and
procedures. There is an opportunity to learn budgeting and procurement. This
is a great opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of interpretive
center operations starting from the ground up.

Equipment: The Trail Center will provide work space, Internet access, period
costumes, and props; The Trail Center also has a small resource library. 

Americorps Qualifications:
To qualify, you must be at least 17 years of age and a US citizen that has
received a high school diploma or GED (or be willing to achieve this before
using education award).
