PhD Assistantship – Vernal pool restoration

Description: The Research Assistant will participate in a collaborative
project between SUNY-ESF and the Upper Susquehanna Coalition to address (1)
whether constructed pools represent population “sinks” or “sources” to
amphibian production at the landscape scale, (2) patterns of assembly of
aquatic communities in constructed pools in relation to pool
characteristics, (3) effects of pool construction on plant communities and
tree growth, and (4) whether pool construction interacts with hydrological
processes of the adjacent forest.  Study site is in Tully, New York, where
some 50 pools will be constructed after baseline studies are completed in
spring and summer of 2009; dissertation will focus on response to
construction in biotic communities of both created and pre-existing natural
pools.  Matriculation is through the Department of Environmental and Forest
Biology at SUNY-ESF.  

Qualifications: (1) MS degree in ecology, conservation biology, or related
field; (2) broad interests in restoration ecology; (3) strong undergrad GPA
and GRE Verbal + Quantitative scores; (4) able to start field work
approximately 15 May 2009.

Salary: $18,000-20,000 for four years, plus tuition and benefits
