NAAEE Higher Education EE Faculty Fellowship Program
Purpose
The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE)
created the Higher Education EE Faculty Fellowship program to promote
its Guidelines for Preparation and Professional Development of
Environmental Educators and how these guidelines can help improve the
quality of environmental education (EE) at colleges and universities.
These fellowships are designed to foster mentoring relationships
among university faculty to develop or expand EE programs.
This component is being added to a number of other elements in
NAAEE's higher education networking and mentoring strategy, which
includes development of an online directory of environmental and
environmental education faculty. Fellows and their mentors are
expected to complete profiles in this online directory.
The program offers faculty the opportunity to travel to another
institution to learn how model EE programs have been developed and
implemented, or to have faculty at the model institution travel to
the Fellow's university to provide guidance and support in developing
a new program. Either mechanism offers opportunities for faculty to
develop working relationships and exchange ideas.
Guidelines for Applying
The maximum amount of funding is $2,500 per institution. NAAEE
intends to award three fellowships prior to April 1, 2009.
* Deadline to apply is March 25, 2009. Decisions for funding will
be announced on or before April 1, 2009. Fellowship visits must be
made and final reports filed June 30, 2009.
* All full-time faculty are eligible to apply for the NAAEE
Higher Education EE Faculty Fellowship. Graduate students and faculty
in temporary positions are not eligible.
* Each applicant should already have a faculty mentor with full
time teaching status at another institution identified. A letter from
the faculty mentor should accompany the application indicating the
mentor's willingness to participate and specifying the role of the mentor.
* An applicant may choose a mentor from any university in any country.
Guidelines for Evaluating Fellowship Applications
* Preference will be given to applicants who are NAAEE members.
* Preference will be given to applicants who propose a faculty
mentor who is an NAAEE member.
* Incomplete applications will not be evaluated.
* Primary criteria for evaluation include:
* Potential for enhancing teaching of environmental education
* Clarity of explanation of how the NAAEE Guidelines for the
Preparation and Professional Development of Environmental Educators
will be used to enhance the applicant's teaching of environmental educators
* Likelihood of promoting new or enhanced inter-institutional
collaborations
* Clarity and strength of proposal
* Strength of justification of both the project and the budget
Guidelines for the Fellowship Visit
* Upon notification of being selected as a chosen Fellow, the
fellowship recipient should contact the faculty member whom the
applicant wishes to visit, or wishes to have visit the applicant's
university, and ascertain when the visit would be possible.
* If visiting another university, the applicant must provide a
letter of invitation from the faculty host at that university. If
hosting a visiting faculty mentor, the applicant must provide a
letter of acceptance from the faculty mentor. Each letter should
include a statement of the activities to be conducted, the resources
made available to the visitor, and a summary of expected or potential
outcomes of the project. A copy of the letter should be provided to
NAAEE at least one month prior to the visit.
* If visiting another institution, the chosen Fellow may consult
with faculty and/or students or engage in whatever activities are
agreeable to the visitor and host institution.
Funding Amounts, Match, Eligible and Ineligible Expenses
* The applicant's home institution must provide an amount equal
to the Fellowship as match. Fellowship funds and match funds may be
used for faculty salaries and benefits, transportation, lodging and
meals, research supplies, copy charges, or office supplies or
expenses. Salaries for student employees are not eligible budget
items. NAAEE will provide forms for documenting how Fellowship funds
have been spent and how match has been attained.
* Travel budgets must follow federal travel guidelines published
by the General Services Administration for maximum amounts for
lodging, per diem for meals, and reimbursement for mileage. See

* This fellowship award is not designated to supplement sabbatical leaves.
* Faculty members will be responsible for arranging coverage of
their duties at their home campus during their absence.
Publicity and Reports
* An announcement will be made by the host institution announcing
the visit and include a statement that funds for the visit are made
possible by the North American Association for Environmental
Education under a grant from the Environmental Education and Training
Partnership and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
* Within one month of the visit funded by this Fellowship, on a
form provided by NAAEE, the Fellow will submit a brief report to
NAAEE and the Fellow's department supervisor describing outcomes of
the visit and offering suggestions for future implementation of EE at
the university.
* Within one month of the visit funded by this Fellowship, the
Fellow and mentor are expected to complete profiles in NAAEE's
online higher education directory, or update an existing profile, and
notify NAAEE of the completion of this task.
* Six months from the visit funded by this Fellowship, the Fellow
and mentor are expected to submit a report to NAAEE regarding any
additional contact since the initial meeting and what changes have
occurred in the Fellow's institution as a result of the visit. The
report may take the form of an article for the NAAEE newsletter.
Contact sbumpous at naaee.org for newsletter deadlines and word count
for the story. Fellows and their mentors also are encouraged to share
their experiences by submitting a session proposal for the 2010 NAAEE
annual conference. Online proposal submission is expected to open in
October 2009.
