Based at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater, MD, 26 miles east of Washington DC and 7 miles south of Annapolis at a modern laboratory and office complex on 2,650 acres of land on the western shoreline of Chesapeake Bay surrounding the Rhode River subestuary. SERC research, education and outreach focus on environmental processes and human impacts in linked ecosystems of the coastal zone. Website: www.serc.si.edu The Science Writer-Editor will author and publish a wide range of printed and electronic documents, including scholarly articles, newsletters, press releases, speeches, promotional brochures, displays, and exhibits, which translate scientific information and concepts for a broad audience. Duties will also include production of pictorial and graphic images for inclusion in these documents and promotion of SERC Research and education Programs through a wide spectrum of media outlets including traditional print and electronic sources. The Science Writer-Editor will assist in the maintenance and updating of SERC’s Internet/Intranet web site and produce and maintain web pages using software applications. The position requires working with a team of scientists, educators, post-doctoral fellows, students, and visiting scientists as well as establishing and maintaining a portfolio of media contacts. Desired Qualifications and Experience: • Bachelors level training or equivalent experience in journalism and/or biological/environmental sciences. • Demonstrated ability in writing, editing, and publishing hard copy and electronic documents that communicate scientific information to a broad audience. • Prior successful experience working with media outlets and sources to produce press releases and feature articles for publication or presentation in print and electronic media. • Knowledge of copyright, crediting, and permissions within standard publication practices. • Experience with computer graphics, photo-editing, and document presentation. • Knowledge of web authoring and management software to construct, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot integrated websites. • Ability to work as team member. • Demonstrated initiative, independence and responsible maturity.
