I'm in the market for a digital sound recorder, and I'm hoping that someone
with experience with either the Marantz 661 or the Marantz 670 will weigh
in. In particular, I want to record animal sounds in the field and then
seamlessly transfer those sound files to a desktop computer for analysis.
I'll not have a chance to use either in the field, which is why I'm asking
for some help. I should perhaps add that I'm switching from a Marantz
cassette recorder which I've liked a great deal, so I'm planning to stick
with Marantz.

>From what I can gather based on product specs and so forth, the 670 seems
more rugged, to have a longer battery life, and to have more options for
file format and recording rate than the 661. Cons include the larger size
and lack of USB port.

The pros for the 661 then include its smaller size and USB capability. I've
read some online reviews that suggest problems with the preamp of the
predecessor (660), but I haven't found similar comments on the newer 661.

If you have pros or cons to add to this list, I'd love to hear them. Or any
other comments regarding these pieces of equipment.

Cheers,
