Hey all, I wanted to thank everyone for all the suggestions I received from my last post on potential mycology text purchases. Being the first time I've posted on ecolog, I'm astonished by the number of responses. What a great resource. For the folks that emailed to ascertain a summary of the suggestions, see below.
Overwhelmingly, the two books suggested were Alexopoulos "Introductory Mycology" and Kendricks "The Fifth Kingdom". The Alexopoulos text is outdated by about 15 or so years, but was still suggested as a great book despite this. Great for taxonomic purposes. Evidently, it is in the process of revision so perhaps the newest edition will be out soon. Anyone have any idea on the date of this supposed release? The Fifth Kingdom by Kendrick was is about 8 years old, but has the added bonus of multiple chapters and images from the text and added cd available online at http://www.mycolog.com/fifthtoc.html. If your contemplating a mycology text, this would be a good place to check it out. the other two books suggested were "Introduction to Fungi" by John Webster and Elizabeth More-Landecker’s “Fundamentals of the Fungi”. Not really much information about these books besides Websters being released in 2007 so it should be relatively current and the last edition of "fundamental of the Fungi" being put out in 1996. Either way, hope this all helps those also looking for texts on the fungi. Thanks again to everyone that responded.
