*Position Opening: *Field technician positions in seed dispersal
The Savannah River Site, South Carolina

We seek to fill one (1) crew leader and five (5) field technician positions
for a large-scale experiment on seed dispersal in heterogeneous and
fragmented habitats. The technicians will join a team of several principal
investigators (Ellen Damschen, Jay Turner and Dirk Baker at Washington
University in St. Louis, Gil Bohrer at The Ohio State University, and Ran
Nathan at Hebrew University in Jerusalem) funded by the National Science
Foundation. The primary focus of this position will be working with
post-doc Dirk Baker on a wind-driven seed dispersal project. Tasks will
include taking meteorological measurements, quantifying habitat structure,
conducting vegetation surveys, and trapping and measuring seeds. We will
also conduct seed release and recovery experiments, some of which will be
conducted at night.

The positions will begin in late August or early September 2009 and will
last for a minimum of three months; however, possibilities for extension
exist and applicants are encouraged to indicate dates of availability in
their application letter. Pay rate will be $11/hr for the crew leader and
$10/hr for the technicians. Applicants must have a valid driver's license,
and a functional, reliable vehicle that they can drive to field sites.
 Personal
vehicle use *on the job* will be reimbursed at $0.55/mile. The technicians
will live near the field site in New Ellenton, SC.

This project will be working alongside and in coordination with other
ongoing projects on the effects of corridors on various aspects of plant
restoration, including dispersal, establishment and population growth.

*Minimum qualifications:*

· Demonstrated leadership abilities (if applying for the crew leader
position)

· Completion or progress towards a bachelor’s degree in ecology,
biology, or a related discipline

· Must be able to endure hot and humid conditions and long hours in
the field including working at night

*Desired qualifications:***

· Previous field research experience

· Plant identification skills

· Experience with hand tools

Because the Savannah River Site is a highly secure area run by the U.S.
Department of Energy, non-United States citizens may have difficulty gaining
clearance to work there. Additional information about the project is

Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

*Application deadline:* August 1, 2009

*To apply*, please email a CV and letter describing past experience, why
this position is interesting or important to you, whether you’re interested
