ZWICKEL. * Pp. 152-154. * Sooty Grouse from Terrace, British Columbia, north to southeastern Alaska have the apteria on the neck red (as in Dusky Grouse), not yellow (as in other populations of Sooty Grouse); no locations have yet been found where Sooty Grouse are polymorphic or intermediate in apterium color, but further work is needed to determine the species' patterns of geographic variation with regard to this trait.
