Hi Sara - I worked with SAS and Proc PHREG which is similar to LIFETEST in
an analysis of root survivorship.  I can also highly recommend the book by
Allison that Li mentioned - I relied on it quite a lot.  My paper on root
survivorship has some discussion of survival analysis (see Anderson et al.
2003. New Phytologist 158: 489-501).  Also, I modeled many of my analyses
on work by my colleague Christina Wells (see Wells and Eissenstat. 2001.
Ecology 82: 882-892).
