The Joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer and Scripps Colleges is currently seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in Ecology (see full job ad below). We are looking for candidates with a strong field component in their work (marine, freshwater, or terrestrial), and applicants who integrate field research with lab or modeling approaches are especially welcome. This position is a great opportunity for those with interests in research and in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. The Joint Science program is shared by three top undergraduate liberal arts colleges and integrates biology, chemistry and physics in the same department (27 total full-time faculty), creating a strong science community and opportunities for innovative collaboration. Proximity to other institutions in the Claremont Colleges consortium (including Pomona and Harvey Mudd Colleges) and in the greater Los Angeles area also facilitates interaction with colleagues. Our location provides access to a number of potential research sites in a range of ecosystems, including a small field station adjacent to campus. The Claremont Colleges recently received external funding to develop a new cross- disciplinary environmental major, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with current faculty and new hires associated with this program.
Tenure-Track Position in Ecology Joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges The Joint Science Department invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Ecology at the Assistant Professor level, to begin July 2010. The department, which houses the biology, chemistry, and physics faculty for Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges (three of the five undergraduate Claremont Colleges), offers innovative and interdisciplinary programs in the natural sciences and prides itself on its small class sizes. We seek a broadly trained ecologist with extensive field experience who is committed to excellence in teaching and will engage undergraduates in high-level research. Applicants who integrate field research with other approaches, such as molecular, isotopic, or modeling techniques, are especially welcome. Teaching responsibilities may include participation in the Introductory Biology sequence, a course for non-science majors, and an upper division ecology course with a strong field component in the candidate’s area of research specialization (for example, marine, freshwater, or desert ecology). A Ph.D. and a record of scholarly publication are required.
