Dear Colleagues, We'd like to announce and encourage abstract submissions to the following interdisciplinary session for the 2010 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Portland, OR (February 22-26). Help with circulating the message is appreciated!

*IT29: Small-Scale Low-Salinity Plumes in Coastal Zones*
This session will focus on the dynamics and effects of small low-salinity plumes in the nearshore due to freshwater inflow from streams and small rivers (discharge of 1-100 m3s-1), as well as tidal outflow from estuaries. Although small plumes are frequently overlooked in favor of larger plume systems, the former are more numerous and their inputs can be substantial due to the highly episodic nature of fluxes. Also at this scale, rotational effects are secondary. As a result, understanding the dynamics, fate and effects of small plumes is important for understanding and managing coastal ecosystems including habitats regularly depended on for ecosystem services. This session will focus on methods and issues concerning small low-salinity plumes such as nearshore transport, environmental fate, beach and coastal water quality, climate change, plankton blooms, ecological impacts and related policy.

Submissions from a diverse range of perspectives and geographies are highly encouraged. The deadline for contributed abstracts is October 15. Instructions for abstract submission are located at: _http://www.agu.org/meetings/os10/program/abstract_submissions.php_
