The Joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer and Scripps
Colleges is currently seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in
Ecology (see full job ad below). We are looking for candidates with a
strong field component in their work (either marine or terrestrial), and
applicants who integrate field research with lab or modeling approaches
are especially welcome. The Joint Science program is shared by three top
undergraduate liberal arts colleges and integrates biology, chemistry and
physics in the same department (27 total full-time faculty), creating a
strong science community and opportunities for innovative collaboration in
both teaching and research. Proximity to other institutions in the
Claremont Colleges consortium (including Pomona and Harvey Mudd Colleges)
and in the greater Los Angeles area also facilitate interaction with
colleagues. Our location provides access to a number of potential
research sites in a range of ecosystems, including a small field station
adjacent to campus. The Claremont Colleges recently received external
funding to develop a new cross-disciplinary environmental major, and the
successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a number of
current faculty and new hires associated with this program.

Tenure-Track Position in Ecology
Joint Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges

The Joint Science Department invites applications for a tenure-track
appointment in Ecology at the Assistant Professor level, to begin July
2010. The department, which houses the biology, chemistry, and physics
faculty for Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges (three of the
five undergraduate Claremont Colleges), offers innovative and
interdisciplinary programs in the natural sciences and prides itself on
its small class sizes. We seek a broadly trained ecologist with extensive
field experience who is committed to excellence in teaching and will
engage undergraduates in high-level research. Applicants who integrate
field research with other approaches, such as molecular, isotopic, or
modeling techniques, are especially welcome. Teaching responsibilities may
include participation in the Introductory Biology sequence, a course for
non-science majors, and an upper division ecology course with a strong
field component in the candidate’s area of research specialization (for
example, marine, freshwater, or desert ecology). A Ph.D. and a record of
scholarly publication are required.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and statements outlining
research interests and teaching philosophy to: Ecology Search Committee,
W.M. Keck Science Center, 925 N. Mills Ave, Claremont, CA 91711-5916.
Three letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the same
address. Questions may be directed to Professor David E. Hansen, Dean of
the Joint Science Department: [email protected]. Additional
information about the department may be found at www.jsd.claremont.edu.
Review of applications will begin on October 19th and will continue until
the position is filled.

In a continuing effort to enrich our academic environment and provide
equal educational and employment opportunities, the Claremont Colleges
actively encourage applications from members of historically under-
represented groups in higher education. The Claremont Colleges are an
equal opportunity employer.
