This is all part of a really bad trend! It sounds as though the UK does
not want visiting scientists. If they don't want scientists, who do
they want? People who lie about why they want to enter the country?
To hear this trend is increasingly global is terrible. To hear
scientists are regularly experiencing these sorts of hassles is
terrible. UK universities should be having a hissy fit to their
lawmakers. US universities should have done the same thing when Bush jr
started this trend (some did). The tourism industry should be having a
hissy, too. Think about all the people whose first personal contact
with the USA is getting fingerprinted. It makes a complete mockery of
'Welcome to the USA.' And now there's arbitrary deportation and mystery
laws and permits...
I just do not understand the value of treating ordinary people as though
they are criminals and terrorists. I cannot see how this makes the
world safer or better. It certainly does nothing to spread goodwill.
