We are currently in the midsts of a mass extinction. As we all know they have
happened before and provided opportunities for new organisms to diverge. The
difference between the mass extinctions of the past and the current on it that
this is the first to be cause by a biological agent: Humans. Nature does not
have a plan, it works with what it has. No one planned for a meteor to crash
into the planet and kill 90% of life just as none planned for a primate
species to evolve the intelligence to destroy just as much. We humans have a
tendency to look at ourselves outside nature, as if somehow we don't abide to
it's laws. Now, I am not trying to justify "allowing" species to go extinct,
and I certainly believe that efforts should be put into preserving the
organisms that need it, but at the same time we need to understand that
extinction and evolution go hand in hand. Just because Homo sapiens are the
first organism to evolve the intelligence capable of causing a mass extinctio!
n does not mean they will be the last.
