*Ph.D. student opportunity at Wright State: Host plant resistance to wood boring insects*

I am seeking a Ph.D. student to join a project to examine the mechanistic basis of host resistance of trees to wood boring insects, with a specific focus on ash tree resistance to the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). This project is part of a larger collaborative effort, funded by USDA-APHIS, involving Don Cipollini at Wright State, and Pierluigi Bonello, Dan Herms, and Omprakash Mittipalli at Ohio State. Major objectives of this part of project include the examination of various phloem metabolite fractions from different ash species, as well as specific metabolites and proteins identified through various metabolomic and proteomic screens, for their effects on EAB larval growth in vitro, as well as examinations of resistance in living trees. In addition to contributing to these objectives, the student is expected to develop an independent line of research associated with host plant resistance to wood boring insects, using the interaction of ash with native and invasive wood borers as a model. This position will be located at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, with frequent interaction with collaborators at Ohio State and travel to various research sites. The student will be enrolled in Wright State's Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences Ph.D. Program. At least four years of support are available through a combination of graduate research and graduate teaching assistantships, and the student may start as early as Spring Quarter 2010 (late March). Application requirements include: Bachelors degree in Biology, Ecology, Entomology or related field; GRE scores within the last 5 y; minimum IBT TOEFL score of 100/120 and ability to pass a verbal English test (foreign students only). Preferred qualifications include: Masters degree or equivalent experience; a strong background in host plant resistance, with specific skills in insect rearing and bioassays; experience in field and laboratory research; good communication skills.
