Dear colleagues,

We are offering a special session entitled "River Research: Populations to
Ecosystems" (session number S12) as part of the joint ASLO-NABS summer meeting
in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 6-11 June 2010. River studies have expanded greatly
over the last decade, addressing questions of interest to a broad range of
scientists. We invite presentations on the most recent developments in our
understanding of river systems. Topics can cover studies of the population
ecology of taxa, community interactions, the influence of biotic and abiotic
factors on community structure, productivity, trophic dynamics, and nutrient
cycling. Of particular interest are papers that address broader questions in
river science, with an eye toward interdisciplinary studies. Presenters will be
invited to submit a manuscript for a special issue in the new journal River
Systems.

Other contributions may include, but are not limited to:
- River hydraulics leading to the temporary retention of matter, or to
hydraulic exchange
      between compartments of the river
- Relationships between riverine morphology and ecological function
- Nutrient and carbon turnover and spiraling
- Plankton development and transport
- Use of allochthonous and autochthonous organic matter in the riverine
food web
- Oxygen budgets and whole-stream metabolism both in natural and
altered systems
- Microbial processes influencing water quality
- New methodological approaches
- Conceptual and process-based ecosystem models

Please note that the abstract submittal deadline will be 12th February 2010.
More information on the meeting can be found at
