Description: The Smithsonian Institution's Conservation and Research Center is 
hiring one field research intern for a 3 month appointment (with possibility of 
extension) from mid-February 2010 to mid-May 2010. Primary duties will be to 
help ecologists develop a manual of best practices for landowners wishing to 
increase native plants on their lands, to identify state and federal agencies 
that can assist landowners and work on communicating with landowners on 
options. The intern will assist ecologists on land-use management at research 
center, including plant surveys, prescribed burns, herbicide of invasive plant 
species, and manual removal of invasives. Duties will also include assisting 
with training students in field ecology techniques, camera trapping, small 
mammal trapping, white-tailed deer monitoring, and data entry.



 Location: Front Royal, VA



 Salary: $600/month stipend and free housing



Qualification: Applicant must have a BS degree in ecology or related field and 
experience in field ecology. A background in management of warm season grasses 
and habitat restoration would also be beneficial. A good knowledge of 
Virginia's plant species and their identification, as well as strong verbal, 
written, and GIS skills are highly desirable. Review of proposals will start 
January 15 and the position will start within 1 month of decision.
