PROFESSIONAL POSITION DESCRIPTION


POSITION TITLE: Research Assistant in Ecosystem Ecology Requisition #2009012724

POSITION SUMMARY: This position will assist with research on ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry in arid and semi-arid systems. The position will include field and laboratory work.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise, direct, delegate, and evaluate work of assigned staff
- Complete field work on vegetation and soils
- Process soil samples and perform biogeochemical analyses
- Prepare tables and figures for publications; assist with project report development
- Conduct leaf litter decomposition studies
- Analyze minirhizotron images
- Perform related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: University and department policies and procedures; principles and practices of organization and administration; principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation. EndNote, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, SigmaPlot and Rootracker software; analytical procedures for carbon and nitrogen content in soil and litter samples; field ecophysiological measurements (leaf water potential, photosynthesis).

Skills in: Short-and long-range planning; problem analysis and resolution; report preparation and presentation; oral and written communication; performing field research and processing large numbers of lab soil samples and litterbags.

Ability to: Direct, evaluate, train, and supervise the work of assigned personnel; develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities; analyze and evaluate information.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

- BA or BS Degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field
- 3 years experience
