The Religion and Conservation Biology Working Group (http://www.conbio.org/workinggroups/Religion/) of the Society for Conservation Biology (http://www.conbio.org) is issuing a call for papers for a Workshop titled 'Prospects and Values of Integrating Religion in Conservation of Biology' to be held at the SCB's 24th International Congress for Conservation Biology annual meeting in Edmonton, Canada from July 3-7th (http://www.conbio.org/Activities/Meetings/2010/). Expected Outcomes: · Enhanced awareness among multi-disciplinary stakeholders. · Promoting capacity development of professionals in conservation planning and strategic thinking through better understanding of religion and its role in successes of biodiversity conservation processes. · Promoting key concepts of conservation through teaching and perceptions of the religion. · Equip conservation professionals and policy makers with effective knowledge and tools of religious-based schools and thoughts for sustainable biodiversity action planning and decision making. · Promoting concepts and fundamentals of religion and conservation biology and its role in conservation science and education.
Papers must directly address the relationship between religion and the conservation of habitat and biodiversity by focusing on actual field situations in which religious components of a community or communities interacted with conservation biologists in some significant aspect(s) of the measurement or management of biodiversity issues. Proposals for these oral presentations must carry the presenters name, address, phone number (with nation code), fax number, and email address in the upper left hand corner, with the title of the proposed presentation to follow in the center top of the page, followed by a description of the subject to be presented no longer than 200 words and of a professional quality sufficient to act as an abstract. All individual workshop speakers need to submit an abstract following the instructions of the oral presentation format. If accepted, oral presentations must not exceed 10 minutes with a five minute question and answer period for a full length of 15 minutes. Presenters will be notified of their acceptance by 10th February. We are considering inviting some poster presentations and will address this in a later announcement.
