JOHN W. THOMSON RESEARCH AWARD



*Purpose:*          To encourage student research on Wisconsin’s
non-cultivated plants.



*Amount of award:*      $1,000



*Eligibility:*       Any undergraduate or graduate student in a Wisconsin
college or university.



*Application:*    Send five (5) copies of the proposal by 31 January 2010

*Proposals Will Include:*



1.      A description of the proposed project, not to exceed five
double-spaced pages, including:

a.       Title

b.      Why the proposed research is desirable

c.       Specific objectives

d.      Methods and timetable

e.       Budget, including line items

f.       Anticipated unpublished and published reports

g.       Literature cited



2.      A brief resumé of the applicant, including address and telephone
number.



3.      For undergraduate students, a letter from a supervising faculty
member.



4.      Names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two other references.



*Requirements and Guidelines:*



1.      Funds may be used for travel, subsistence, equipment, supplies,
computer time, report preparation, and other reasonable expenses, but not
for wages or to supplement funding from a larger grant.

2.      The project must advance knowledge of the taxonomy, ecology, or
natural history of Wisconsin’s “wild” plants, including vascular plants,
bryophytes, algae, fungi, or lichens.

3.      Completion of the project should be feasible within one calendar
year.

4.      Any work on State Natural Areas and/or threatened or endangered
species requires a permit from the Bureau of Endangered Resources of the
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

5.      A written report must be prepared for the Botanical Club of
Wisconsin.



Awards will be announced via letter by 15 February 2010
