Major duties and responsibilities include: · Responsible for the organization, management and supervision of the VMU and its staff; · Collecting, interpreting, analyzing and compiling data in order to submit annual reports; · Interviewing and assisting in making decisions concerning hiring VMU employees; · Performing administrative and personnel management functions relative to staff supervised; · Providing advice and counseling to workers related to work and administrative matters; · Planning and scheduling ongoing production-oriented work; · Placing animal orders, coordinating imports and exports of animal subjects and receiving all animal subjects into the facility; · Maintaining a database of all animal orders, imports and exports; · Receives and performs preliminary physical examinations on all arriving animal subjects; · Collecting a variety of biological substances for chemical, microbial or serologic tests; · Establishing, monitoring and supervising husbandry practices to ensure conformance with requirements; · Coordinating and supervising related laboratories and procedure rooms within the facility; · Providing guidance to research scientists regarding sources of species, proper enclosures, specialized animal equipment and experimental animal techniques of handling and manipulation; · Preparing an annual budget for the animal care facility; · Utilizing knowledge of and follows proper animal handling and accepted euthanization procedures; · Performing animal care and veterinary duties to including feeding, cleaning and caring for all laboratory animals; administering drugs and special diets; monitoring general health; · Performing other duties as assigned.
