Description:
The Great Basin Institute seeks a trail coordinator to manage an extensive
trail project in the Ruby Mountains near Elko, NV. The position may be based
in Reno or Elko. The trail will be a non-motorized trail built to
accommodate hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and pack animals. The
position will coordinate and manage two Nevada Conservation Corps crews (10
person teams including supervisor) providing the construction and
restoration of 12 miles of trail.  The coordinator will require  a strong
background in trail layout (using USFS Standards) and construction. The
position will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the project
including planning camping for the crews, performing quality control,
anticipating production levels, and working with the project partners
involved in the project to ensure compliance with standards. The coordinator
will participate in planning volunteer events and initiate public outreach
within the local community related to the trail. The coordinator will
provide financial, crew accomplishment, and personnel management data to GBI
on a regular basis. The coordinator and crews will be working on a schedule
of 8 days on, 6 days off, with some exceptions for the coordinator based on
need.  The coordinator may assist GBI with crew member orientation in Reno
during the month of May.  

Compensation:  
o       Rate of Pay: Biweekly salary of $1,200 - $1480 DOE

Timeline:  
o       April 5, 2010 – November 12, 2010 (weather dependent)
o       Full time, 40 hours per week

Location:
Lamoille, NV – Lamoille is located at the base of the Ruby Mountains and at
the mouth of Lamoille Canyon. It is a small ranching community of less than
200 people.  Lamoille Canyon is one of the little know scenic wonders of the
west.  Glacier carved with hanging cirques, the canyon is the northern
terminus of the Ruby Crest Trail and has beaver, mountain goat, big horn
sheep, Himalayan snow cock and great stream fishing.  Elko is about 20 miles
from Lamoille.  Elko is the home of Great Basin College and is a community
of about 30,000.  It is also the home of the world famous Western Folklife
Center and the original Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

Qualifications:
o       Bachelor’s degree in recreation, forestry, environmental science or
related field;
o       Extensive experience with trail layout, construction, and knowledge of
USFS trail standards is required;
o       Experience supervising field based conservation teams is a plus;
o       Background in multi-use trail design is preferred;
o       Experience working with GIS software and hand-held GPS equipment;
o       Motivated, self-starter and detail oriented;
o       Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public; 
o       Possess a valid, state-issued drivers license and clean driving record;
o       Experience operating 4WD trucks in an on- and off-road setting, 
including
narrow, mountain forest roads; and
o       Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all
types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40
pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition.
