I am a PhD student doing a field-based project to test the effects of light
(sun versus shade) on White Oak plants, one group of native caterpillars
that feed on these plants (slug caterpillars, Limacodidae), and the
parasitic wasps and flies that attack these caterpillars (parasitoids). All
field work will be conducted in a regional park in Maryland, 45 mins. north
of Washington, DC. Field work will involve searching for caterpillars in the
forest, putting caterpillars reared in the lab into the forest, and
providing caterpillars with fresh leaves to feed on in the lab. For those
interested, there is also an opportunity to light trap for moths at night
(optional). Most of the time will be spent in the field, however, some tasks
will be conducted in the lab at George Washington University in Washington,
DC.

It is NOT required that applicants are able to work the whole field season
(June-Sept), but I would prefer someone who is able to commit to a period of
at least 6 weeks within that window and who can commit to at least 20 hours
of work per week. This is a great opportunity for someone who would like
experience in the field, especially for those interested in ecology and
plant-insect interactions or those who are interested in going to graduate
school in Biology or a related program. The specific tasks of each assistant
are somewhat flexible depending on individual interests and desired skills.

QUALIFICATIONS: No previous experience is required but applicants with
previous field experience, especially working with insects and/or plants are
especially encouraged to apply. However, applicants must be willing to be on
their feet all day in potentially very hot and humid conditions and must be
reliable with a good attitude.

LOGISTICS: Unfortunately, no compensation or housing can be provided.
Transportation to the field site by car WILL be provided from the greater DC
area. No camping is involved but some moderate hiking is required.

TO APPLY: Please send a brief cover letter that includes your dates of
availability, interests and previous applicable experience, if any, brief
resume, and the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of 2 references to
Teresa Stoepler at: [email protected]. Hiring will begin immediately.
