We need your help locating film footage or so-called "B-Roll"
relevant to phenology. With the help of film students at the
University of Arizona, we are making a 10-minute video on the history
and mission of the NPN. This morning, we had the privilege of
interviewing Dr. Joe Caprio, who summers in Bozeman and winters in
Tucson. In 1957, Joe started the Western States Phenological Network,
focusing on lilacs and honeysuckles, and we asked him to share his
memories of how that network got started.
The term "B-roll" refers to secondary footage that adds meaning to a
sequence or disguises the elimination of unwanted content. This
technique of using the
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutaway_%28filmmaking%29>cutaway is
common to hide zooms in
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_film>documentary films: the
visuals may cut away to B roll footage of what the person is talking
about while the A camera zooms in, then cut back after the zoom is complete.
Some examples of B-Roll might be:
* an animation of continental or regional greenup
* an animation of variations in bird migrations
* a time-lapse movie of plant development through the year
* video of insect emergence
* video of birds migrating or animals hibernating
* video of technicians or citizen scientists making phenological
observations
You get the picture.
Because film students are involved and we only have till the end of
the semester, we need your footage right away, say by no later than
April 15, 2010.
The preferred format is MiniDV tapes, but we can also accept digital
formats. We would prefer .mov and .dv files, but will also accept
.mpeg and .avi files. Widescreen is preferred but any screen ration
is acceptable. for digital formats, higher quality media is
preferable (we want the higherst possible frame rates and definition).
Either the tapes or the digital files can be mailed at the address
below. If the files are small (<5 MB), you can email them to Garrett
