The Ouray Ranger District of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison 
National Forests in Montrose, Colorado is looking for field staff for the 
2010 season. Field-going staff will be helping with the Uncompahgre Mesas 
Ecological Restoration and Demonstration Project, a collaborative forest 
restoration project on the Uncompahgre Plateau in Western Colorado. The 
purpose of this project is to use a combination of mechanical fuels 
treatments, commercial timber sales and prescribed fire to increase the 
resiliency of local mixed conifer forests to natural disturbance and 
promote diversity and productivity of the native ecosystem. More

Primary duties will relate to preparing forest stands for ecological 
restoration activities. This will involve:
-Using of forest inventory tools and techniques
-Marking trees for harvest in several different forest types.
-Delineating and surveying (using GPS)stand boundaries.
-Developing and applying map and compass skills for navigation.

Staff may also take part in insect and disease surveys, tree regeneration 
and survival surveys, fence repair related to long-term browse studies and 
preparation of small, beetle kill and/or blow-down salvage harvests.

Positions start June 1, 2010 and will continue through mid-November 
(weather permitting). Staff will work 4, 10 hour days per week and stay 
nights at a USFS administrative site. Pay ranges between $11.95 and $15.00 
an hour, plus per diem compensation, depending on education and experience.

Montrose is situated in the Uncompahgre Valley of West-central Colorado on 
the northern edge of the San Juan Mountains and minutes from Black Canyon 
of the Gunnison National Park. World-class fly fishing, rafting, boating, 
mountain biking, climbing and several large wilderness areas are within a 
short drive of town.  Housing withing the area is generally affordable 
compared to most areas in Colorado, and temporary housing MAY be available 
with the USFS on a first come, first serve basis.
