Hello, I am currently a Master's student at SUNY Stony Brook! I am glad to see this topic brought up because I will be done in a year and am hoping to find a job.
The reason I chose a M.S. vs a PhD is because I spent two summer doing field research in the middle of the desert with two PhD candidates. I certainly learned a lot. The things everyone has been saying is pretty much why I opted against a doctorate (at least at this point) because of being over-qualified, being somewhat limited to academia, etc. I am studying ecology and evolution, but I am still unsure of what my "ideal" job is. I am hoping to work with an NGO. Dr. Wayne Getz's advice to me was dependent on when I wanted to start working. Either go get a job now (really in a year) with a M.S. or wait 6 years. I am really hoping that I can find a real job when I am done. I love research, but academia is not really where I want to be. Thanks for all of the advice. Thanks, Jason, for bringing this up, and good luck with your job search! Amanda Crow Master's student SUNY Stony Brook Dept of Ecology and Evolution [email protected]
