Portuguese Society for the Study of
Birds (Spea) is the BirdLife Partner. The mission of our organisation
is to work towards the study and the conservation of wild birds and
their habitats by promoting sustainable development for the benefit
of the future generations.
The
key activities are: Monitoring
and
promotion of the Portuguese IBA network Identification of marine
IBAs; Conservation of steppe birds and promoting a sustainable
agriculture; Conservation of the population of the Azores bullfinch;
Monitoring of Portuguese bird populations (atlas, common bird census,
Xmas and New Year census); Educational projects and campaigns;
Publications on ornithology (Airo and Anuário Ornitológico);
Organisation of congresses and workshops.
The Azores islands used to be the home of
millions of breeding seabirds. Nowadays these colonies decreased
drastically as a result of introduced predators (rats, cats and mice)
and invasive exotic plant species. With the exception of the Cory's
shearwater, seabird populations are confined to small islets and steep
inaccessible cliffs.
This
project consists in a feasibility study to evaluate the possibility to
control and eradicate introduced predators and invasive plant species.
Several demonstrative actions are planned and different control
techniques will be tested.
Corvo
Island is the smallest of the Azores islands and was selected for its
geographic location and habitat availability that contribute for its
value for the breeding populations of seabirds. Vila Franca Islet in São
Miguel Island is also targeted as it provides good conditions to test
some control measures for invasive plants and to attract seabird
populations to breed.
Several
actions within the project will aim to promote Azores environmental
values and environmental tourism, as well as raising public awareness
and incentivate the sustainable use of natural resources.
