Field Work: RAs will assist with collection of forest inventory data for a
remote sensing analysis of hurricane impacts. Work will include hiking to
access remote sites, identifying trees and shrub species, measuring tree
diameters and heights, and assessing stems for damage. Opportunities will
also exist for dendrochronology and fire-effects monitoring. We will be
working in Armando Bermudez and Carmen Ramirez National Parks in the
Cordillera Central (1000-3087m ASL). RAs must be in good physical condition
and able to hike 10-15 miles per day over steep and rocky terrain while
carrying a pack.

Living Conditions: During the work week (5-7 days) we will be camping in the
national parks at established and unestablished camp sites. Drinking water
is often acquired from small springs and streams. June through August is the
dry season, but RAs must be comfortable working in wet and cold conditions.
The RAs will be working in a remote region where medical care, people who
speak English, and access to modern amenities is hard to come by. Weekend
lodging will be provided in the mountain town of Jarabacoa, or you are free
to explore the country on your time off.

Technical Qualifications & Preferred Experience: The RA should have some
prior experience working in the field and/or the lab on projects in forest
ecology. This is a very physically demanding project - experience with
extended backpacking trips is highly preferred. Basic Spanish literacy is a
big plus! Potential candidates must have a valid US Passport or be willing
to acquire one.

Compensation: We will cover all transportation, permitting and living expenses.

Dates: 6-8 weeks in the period from June to early August. Dates are flexible.

How to Apply: To apply for this position, please email the following to
[email protected]: (1) a letter outlining your qualifications for
this position; (2) current CV with professional references.

Application Deadline: Applications will be considered immediately until the
positions are filled.
