Project Description:
The Intern will use taxonomic keys to identify taxa in the field and
in the lab, make plant collections, mount specimens, document
collections, and provide a good foundation and template for future
collections and additions. This intern will collect plant species
throughout all areas of the Park, which will provide incredible
hiking and fieldwork opportunities. The majority of the work will
involve using taxonomic keys for correct scientific identification,
curing, mounting specimens, and cataloging specimens using a
Microsoft Access database. Unsupervised expertise with professional
dichotomous keys, such as Intermountain Flora and A Utah Flora, is
essential for this position.
In addition, this position will offer the intern other opportunities
as well. As time allows, the intern will also work with the fire effects crew
sampling vegetation plots in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks.
He/she will also work with the exotics crew treating non-native
plants, and with the restoration crew propagating native plants,
collecting seed, planting, and restoring degraded habitats. He/she
will also have an opportunity to work with the federally listed
Shivwits Milkvetch as plans are underway to reroute and restore the
Chinle trail to circumvent a sub-population.
Seeking applicants with the following experience: Ability to key
plants to the species level, experience with rare and/or invasive
plant species, plant monitoring & inventorying, herbarium voucher
collection and processing.
Experience in desert, sagebrush, pinion/juniper, Ponderosa pine, and
aspen habitats or arid regions of the western US is beneficial but
not mandatory.
