Job Description,
Marine Science Director
Position Concept:
The Marine Science Director is responsible for vision and mission
implementation through the marine science program at Camp Emerald Bay.
The Director is responsible for day to day execution of the marine
science program: ensures standards of instruction, coverage of all
activities, and has budget accountability. The Director is additionally
accountable for the facilities operation of the Pennington Marine
Science Center aquarium facility and is involved with its development.
The Marine Science Director primarily reports to the Camp Director of
Emerald Bay, and reports to the Executive Director for development.
Position Requirements:
1. Be at least 21 years of age and eligible to work in the United
States of America.
2. Have a four year degree in marine science and two years experience
in aquatic animal husbandry.
3. Be able to implement fun, challenging and rewarding programming
focused on the vision and mission of Camp Emerald Bay in an outdoor
environment for Junior and High School aged youth.
4. Be certified as a Dive Master with at least 75 dives.
5. Have a scientific collection permit from the California Department
of Fish and Game or be able to obtain one. Small boat handling
experience is also recommended.
6. Be willing to live full-time at Camp Emerald Bay on Santa Catalina
Island. The camp is isolated and trips into Avalon (on Catalina Island)
are infrequent. Opportunities to visit the mainland are available, but
very limited. (Will be a discussion point at interview). Housing will
be provided.
7. Have a valid California Drivers License or the ability to obtain one.
8. Be goal and task oriented, as well as flexible.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
1. Supervises the marine science staff, interns, and volunteers.
Principle Responsibilities (Summer Camp):
1. Supervise the implementation of the marine science program i.e.
merit badges and activities to meet vision and mission of the camp.
2. Develop programs that meet the vision and mission of Camp Emerald Bay.
3. Evaluate the program to ensure fulfillment of Boy Scout
requirements and effective teaching methods.
4. Assist Camp Director in ensuring Boy Scout National Standards
compliance.
5. Assist in the teaching of curriculum.
6. Assist the Program Director in hiring summer marine science staff.
7. Train and provide continuing education to marine science staff.
8. Supervise marine science staffs tasks and responsibilities.
9. Supervise and provide opportunities for building and maintaining
staff morale.
10. Assess camper evaluations.
11. Manage marine science staff meetings.
12. Maintain and update Program and Facilities Operations Manual.
13. Assist the Program Director when requested.
Principle Responsibilities (Spring and Fall Camp):
1. Provide program support and implement programs for Emerald Bay
Academy of Ethics and Leadership.
2. Train and ensure the care of the center through client staff.
3. Draw-up and request from visiting groups an evaluation of their
experience and address pertinent issues. Positive comments passed onto
the staff, maintained and enhanced for future groups.
General Responsibilities:
1. Manage the marine science inventory.
2. Develop an annual year-end report, program order and wish list.
3. Maintain the aquarium facility operation which includes but is not
limited to day to day maintenance and trouble shooting, lighting,
plumbing, overall exhibit aesthetics, and daily cleanings of aquariums
and facility.
4. Ensure a diverse representation of the local sea life at the aquarium.
5. Ensure the health and well being of collected species by providing
a balanced diet, water quality management, and isolation and care of the
sick, etc.
6. Maintain exhibits based on vision and mission.
7. Assist in promotion of the center to the larger community.
8. Develop partnerships with local and regional educational and
scientific communities.
9. Seek research opportunities for the center to be involved with.
10. Ensure the marine science program is an integral component of
Camp Emerald Bay.
11. Assist the Program Director in the recruitment, hiring and
supervision of staff, interns, and volunteers.
The Western Los Angeles County Council of the Boy Scouts of America is
