I think this was discussed recently, but I suppose anyone contemplating higher education should beware of the student loan trap. Search and ye shall find, e.g., http://www.forbes.com/2010/02/23/student-loan-debt-payment-deferral-personal-finance-career-change_print.html http://blogs.forbes.com/moneybuilder/2010/01/29/income-based-student-loan-repayment-what-you-need-to-know/ Some students end up with a bigger obligation than they can pay off and can't walk away from. Then there's The Economy, the "job market," and the plethora of graduates . . .

Then there's the issue of fulfilling one's passion and/or getting a first-rate education and "a job." Occasionally one finds a small college with an impassioned staff that enjoys delivering skills and facilitating one's Quest where the cost will be minimal, but then there is the specter of the Big Universities where one just runs the gauntlet along with the rest of the herd unless one is glib enough, charming enough, and willing to take it enough to "make it."

How many recent Ph.D's are there out there who have the job of their dreams and how many are flipping burgers or telemarketing or are otherwise far short of them?

I suspect that Karen's case is not atypical. But what does she WANT? Good Lord, what do students WANT? And what are they likely to get at what cost? Will they be victims or the recipients of a rosy future? Precisely--PRECISELY--how do they PREDICT this?

Subject: [ECOLOG-L] Masters of Professional Science

Hello all,

I graduated with several B.S. degrees several years ago, and I have been
unable to get a permanent job, so I have been considering continuing on in
my studies to attain a PhD. While researching programs, I have come across
several "Masters of Professional Science" programs that are geared more
towards teaching you skills and getting you internships to prepare you for
work than preparing you to continue on towards a PhD.

What, if any, are the general opinions on these programs versus a standard
Masters program?

I worry about completing one of these programs, still not being able to get
a job, and being unable to continue on for a PhD.

Thank you for any advice,
Karen
