Hello,
I have a friend who is considering two different master's programs in
Biology. One school seems to be a better fit, but offers only an M.A.
degree (in the College of Natural Sciences), while the other school offers
an M.S. (in the College of Science) but does not have the same level of
resources available for what he wants to do.

In a professional career, is there a fundamental difference in your
opportunities, standing, career advancement, salary cap, etc. with an M.S.
versus an M.A.? He is not sure yet if he will go for a Ph.D., but would
it make a difference if he decides to go for the Ph.D.? In general, is
there a reason choose a program based solely on the letters that you'll
have after your name, versus the other merits of the programs?

I would like to get some general feedback from professionals in the field
regarding this distinction.

Thanks!
Adrian
