In the context of teaching ecology, Alan Knapp and I have written a paper just accepted for Ecosphere titled "Teaching with principles: toward more effective pedagogy in ecology". The paper describes seven principles Alan has developed for his graduate level ecology course and why, based on theories and research about teaching and learning, articulating such principles (concepts, etc.) can help students learn ecology. There are numerous publications on this topic which we refer to. It's important to add that the paper does not prescribe a particular list of principles and makes the case that faculty need to clearly define their own brief set.
