I have been associated with the MentorNet program www.mentornet.net (see previous post) for a number of years and it has been a very satisfying experience. If your mentoring is meaningful it will take longer than 15 minutes a week, at least mine did, but like any interaction of this type, there were periods of intense activity interspersed with what could be multiple months with nothing but the occasional bit of social contact. Obviously all of this depends on your style and level of intensity you want to have with your mentees. I do believe that experienced faculty can do a great service to the young ecological community by participating in this program, especially in these difficult economic times.
