Greenhouse Manager 

Description: 
Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with The Green House Project, seeks an
AmeriCorps Intern to plan and oversee the daily operations of a newly
constructed greenhouse. Initially the Intern will assist in the final
preparation and launching of the Green House. Once the Green House is fully
functional, activities will include, but are not limited to: 
- managing the care of herbs, vegetables, flowers and fruit trees at all
stages of growth;
- plan, schedule and coordinate the performance of staff and volunteers;
- observe environmental standards for agricultural and horticultural
production and pest management;
- monitor climate conditions within the greenhouse (ground source heat
pump/solar panels).

The Intern will also perform a variety of administrative duties that may
include: maintaining all records electronically, staffing, payroll, accounts
payable, accounts receivable, grant administration and accountability, HUD
reports and monthly/yearly budgets. Other duties may include: tilling soil;
applying fertilizers; weeding, thinning or pruning crops; applying
pesticides; cleaning, grading, sorting, packing and loading harvested
products; construction of trellises; and designing and installing irrigation
systems.

An experienced and effective manager will be a self-starter, able to
supervise people and resources to ensure the production of healthy and
marketable flowers, plants and trees. They must be able to implement
conflict resolution practices in the workplace and be able to work with
students, including those with disabilities. 

Compensation:
Living Stipend: $18,000

Timeline: February 14, 2011 - February 3, 2012

Qualifications: 
- An Associate's degree or higher in horticulture or a related field is
required. 
- At least two years of experience as a greenhouse or nursery worker is
preferred. 
- Possess an understanding of integrated pest management, fruit tree pruning
and have familiarity with pesticides, fertilizers, irrigation and planting
procedures.  
- Knowledge of propagation, planting and transplanting techniques for herbs,
vegetables and fruit.
- Coursework or experience in marketing and/or business management is
preferred. 
- Computer skills /experience working with Word -2007, XP or greater-,
spreadsheets, databases and accounting.
Possess a pesticide applicator’s license or have ability to acquire one on
hire. 
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work under hot, humid conditions for
hours at a time.
- A valid driver’s license, personal vehicle and car insurance are required.
- Managerial experience preferred.
- Previous experience working with volunteers is preferred.
- Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award
(limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education
awards), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and
federal criminal background checks.
