Description:
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the U.S Fish & Wildlife
Service, is recruiting a Visitor Services Specialist to support efforts at
two southern Nevada national wildlife refuges - Pahranagat and Moapa
Valley. The Specialist will work collaboratively with Refuge staff to
manage and implement a variety of visitor service programs. Programs will
mainly revolve around interpretation, education and volunteers. Specific
tasks include:
• Develop and present a variety of interpretive and environmental
education programs;
• Draft environmental education curricula, as well as interpretive
materials including pamphlets, exhibits, and signs;
• Prepare and conduct teacher training and orientation programs;
• Manage and enhance volunteer programs including volunteer recruitment,
training, project coordination, recognition, etc.;
• Staff information desks in visitor centers or contact stations;
• Audit and coach other visitor services staff in the interpretive
programs; and
• Prepare draft refuge visitor services, interpretive, sign, education or
recreation plans.
This is a multi-year position that is funded through December 2013
Compensation:
o Rate of pay: $18.59/hour (2011), with annual pay increases pending
favorable performance review

Timeline:
o Annual renewable contract beginning in March/April 2011 (or upon
availability)
o Full time, 40 hours per week
o Minimal overtime and/or holiday/weekend work may be required on occasion
Qualifications:
o Bachelor’s degree in education or related coursework and commensurate
field experience;
o Experience developing and implementing environmental education and
outreach programs and curricula;
o Experience conducting interpretation, highly desirable;
o Experience recruiting, training and/or managing volunteers;
o Experience living or working in a desert environment (Mojave Desert,
desirable), and knowledge of or desert ecosystems and natural/cultural
resources, preferable;
o Experience creating interpretive materials (e.g.: pamphlets, posters) or
displays;
o Knowledge of and/or experience developing multi-media programs,
desirable;
o Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented and capable of working
with little direct supervision to develop and present programs;
o Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities;
o Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public in a variety of
forums;
o Ability to speak English and Spanish conversationally, desirable but not
required;
o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments; and
o Possess valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license.
