Graduate and Professional Training Course

Effective Conservation Leadership

May 3-13, 2011

Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Program

At the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, Front Royal, VA, USA

What makes for a truly successful conservation leader? This question is not always easy to answer, but Effective Conservation Leadership will introduce participants to a suite of key conservation leadership skills to help them succeed in a variety of situations. During the course, participants will define what leadership means to them and develop a “toolbox” of skills for becoming a better leader in conservation circumstances.

Employing environmental and conservation case studies, participants will work together in group exercises, discussions, and conflict simulations to explore the challenges of dealing with the diverse groups and positions often involved in conservation issues. Participants will evaluate their skills and competencies as leaders. They will also use decision-making models to evaluate scenarios and learn how such models improve their ability to achieve ethical outcomes and avoid the detrimental effects of “group think.”

Instruction will be provided by a variety of professionals from the Smithsonian Institute and George Mason University, including Dr. Francisco Dallmeier (Head Center for Conservation Education and Sustainability, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute), Dr. Catherine Christen (Graduate and Profession Program Director, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, and Dr. Nance Lucas (Associate Dean of New Century College, George Mason University). Most instruction will take place at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute facility in Front Royal, VA.

The course fee is $2,500, which includes instruction and course materials as well as all course meals and lodging, and transport to/from Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD). All other travel costs and incidental expenses are the participant’s responsibility. Participants earn Continuing Education Units; graduate course credits (3) are available for qualified applicants through George Mason University (total fee: $2750 in-state (VA), $3500 out-of-state).
