The Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) is seeking an experienced
educator with strong communication, teaching, mentoring, and naturalist
skills to fill the full-time, temporary (approximately mid-June through
Labor Day 2011) position of Education Program Coordinator at the MERI Center
for Marine Studies in Blue Hill, Maine.

The individual who fills this key summer position will be a highly
organized, effective educator and manager with excellent communication and
leadership skills who is able to work well under pressure, and enjoys
working both independently and as part of a team. This position provides an
exciting and challenging opportunity for a talented education professional
to gain experience in coordinating programs and supervising interns. The
successful candidate will possess a personal interest in the marine
environment and a commitment to the mission of the organization.

Primary Job Responsibility:

Coordinate and implement MERI’s summer education and outreach programs and
assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the MERI Center for Marine
Studies public spaces. Conduct educational programs at the Center; assist
with the training and supervision of interns, naturalists and volunteers;
oversee development of program curricula; and articulate and promote MERI’s
research and education mission to the public.
This is a full-time, temporary (mid-June through Labor Day 2011) position.

Job Description

    * Organize and coordinate summer program activities including boat trip
and summer class registrations, intern and naturalist assignments, programs
for camps, yacht clubs, and other groups; assist with Center tours
    * Assist in the training, supervision and mentoring of summer education
interns, junior interns and volunteers

    * Coordinate with Office Manager and reception staff to ensure adequate
coverage of reception desk and public spaces during MERI summer business
hours and after-hours events
    * Oversee maintenance and upkeep of the Ocean Aquarium Room
    * Assist with organization and maintenance of MERI’s Sea Lending Library
    * Manage MERI Eco-Store operations and the development of inventory
    * Oversee and assist interns in development of marine science program
curricula for informal and classroom education projects
    * Develop educational resource materials and products, displays,
posters, fact sheets, flyers, and Power Point presentations
    * Assist in preparing press releases and other communications products
    * Establish and maintain positive relationships with the community, and
effectively articulate MERI’s research and education mission to the public
    * Assist with MERI-sponsored lectures, conferences, meetings, special
mailings and fundraising events
    * When necessary, conduct MERI in-house and on-the-water education programs
    * Pitch in, as do all employees, on projects as needed
    * As the job is further defined, responsibilities may change or be
altered to meet MERI’s needs. This would be done in association with the
Education Director and the Associate Director.


Reports to: Education Director and Associate Director

This is a full-time, temporary (Summer 2011) position with competitive salary.

The successful applicant will have broad-based experience, preferably in
marine science education, with some background in fieldwork and naturalist
skills. The candidate will possess excellent academic, personal and
communication skills. Applicants must possess the ability to adapt to a
changing work environment, and be available to work some nights, weekends,
and holidays during MERI’s busy summer months.
Minimum requirements to be successful in this position are: An interest in
the marine environment that is consistent with the MERI mission; and
demonstrated computer, writing, and presentation skills. An MA/MSc in marine
sciences, environmental sciences, biology, zoology, education or similar
major with 2+ years of teaching experience and 3+ years supervisory
experience, or a BA/BSc with 2+ years teaching experience and 5+ years
supervisory experience is preferred. Knowledge of basic computer software
including the Microsoft Office suite is required; experience with graphics
software and cash registers is preferable. Must possess a valid driver’s
license and a good driving record. Knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and boating
safety is desirable.

Time Requirements: Temporary full-time (40+ hours/week) with occasional
evening and weekend hours required. Preferred start date is no later than
June 15. Must be available through the end of August, preferably until Labor
Day weekend.
