MAA PREP Workshop - Mathematical Biology: Beyond Calculus

June 12 – 18, 2011
Sweet Briar College
Sweet Briar, Virginia
Co-organizers: Raina Robeva, Terrell Hodge, and Robin Davies

The Mathematics Association of America supports a wide variety of
Professional Enhancement Program (PREP) workshops. These offer faculty
the opportunity to learn new skills and boost their careers. This PREP
workshop is an opportunity for math-biology faculty pairs to learn and
explore the world of mathematical biology together.

Problems from gene regulation, biochemical reaction networks, DNA
sequencing, and phylogenetics constitute a cross-section of challenges
in modern molecular and systems biology. This workshop will focus on
such problems at levels appropriate for classroom projects and student
research. Along with the underlying biology, participants will learn
to build models using finite dynamical systems, Boolean networks,
linear, polynomial, and abstract algebra, and probabilistic methods.
We encourage attendance by mathematics-biology faculty teams from the
same institution. No specific background in biology, mathematical
biology, or computational algebra systems will be required. Biology
faculty are not expected to have a specialized mathematical background
beyond precalculus.

Registration Fee: $175 per person or $250 per team of two people ($250
and $400 respectively for registrations received after May 1, 2011).
All meals and lodging costs will be covered with registration for the
workshop. Participants are responsible for their own travel.
Participants will be housed in private rooms in the Florence Elston
Inn and Conference Center on the Sweet Briar campus.
