Position: Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) - Anammox
Date: April 19, 2011
Position Summary:
The Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking
undergraduate applicants to conduct primarily laboratory experiments
for studying sedimentary microbial biogeochemical processes. The NSF
Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) position is available to
U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents only who are currently enrolled
as undergraduates at U.S. colleges or universities (no graduating
seniors). Successful candidates will participate with a MBL and Brown
research team that is examining the metabolic controls between
denitrification and Anammox.
Additional Information:
The REU student will work closely with project scientists at MBL and
Brown University who are investigating the environmental conditions
that lead to N2 production by denitrification versus anammox. The REU
student will have the opportunity to develop their own experiments
using existing thin-disk microcosms that can be used to approximate
conditions that occur in marine sediments. In addition to gaining
experience in biogeochemical measurements and processes, the student
will also be trained in the use of 15N stable isotope tracers to
elucidate microbial metabolic pathways.
Basic Qualifications:
Applicants should have completed basic coursework in biology,
chemistry and possibly ecology or ecosystem studies. An understanding
of basic chemical thermodynamics and/or mathematics, while not
required, will be weighed strongly. Attention to detail and a desire
to learn new laboratory techniques are essential.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Unofficial transcripts are required documentation and we prefer that
you upload them with your application materials. However, if you are
unable to do this, please fax them to our Human Resources Office,
508-289-7118, and include both the posting number and position title.
