Dear Colleague,
I am writing to introduce myself and inquire about any sort of
opportunities which exist or might be created for a faculty or other
sort of independent research/outreach position (not postdoc) at your
institution, or elsewhere if you have such a recommendation.
Currently I am an Entomology postdoc with the USDA (position expires
this year) and my Ph.D. is in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (see
URL link to CV below). In addition to my CV, below are also several URL
links to PDF documents illustrating various facets of my qualifications
and productivity thus far including: my research plans, awards I have
received, press items on several of my publications and journal covers
on which my articles have been featured.
In addition to my research, I also have life-long interests/aspirations
in establishing an insect zoo to complement my research activities and
those of others.
My life-long passion has been in Entomology/insect/invertebrate studies
and I am comfortable referring to myself (as many colleagues do already)
as a self-trained Entomologist.
One of the things I have always wanted to do with my career is establish
an insect zoo or "Invertebrate Studies Institute" (with Entomology
outreach and conservation missions) coupled with a robust research
facility/program. You can see some of my research so far and my article
on the potential of insects and medicine/drug-discovery in the documents
I am sending in an email immediately following this one. In addition to
my interests in inverts as foci for a drug discovery program, I have
also become interested in and networked with many in the field of
Entomophagy - particularly with an eye on insects as a more sustainable
food source for the future than vertebrate livestocks. Of course as a
biochemist with a PhD from a College of Medicine, I can see the
potential for studying insects in a huge number of application areas
such as biofuels, biomaterials, model organisms, biomedical science,
engineering, etc. I have recently began sending out correspondence in
the community to gauge interest in such a facility: for potential
visitors, supporters, collaborators and even those who would want to
work there. So far the feedback has been quite positive.
I also have thought a lot about a good location for this sort of thing.
I think a place with lots of biomass, long growing season and lots of
rainfall (for foodplants, etc.) would be ideal. Ironically, here in
Gainesville, FL where I am I think would be a perfect place, but of
course I can envision several other places, particularly in the SE USA,
that would be a good fit.
Please feel free to pass this email and the documents downloadable from
the links below to anyone you believe would be interested - including
potential employers as well as those who may wish to collaborate on
projects, etc.
I will close for now, but look forward to discussing any possible career
opportunities with you soon.
