As many subscribers to this list know, in the wake of the plane landing on the Hudson several thousand canada geese have been targeted for death here in NYC, valid passports notwithstanding. We have two main populations 1. the real Canada Geese , some that migrate though and some that stay for the winter. A bird last winter hanging around Prospect park, Brooklyn, was banded near Hudson's Bay. 2. "Canadoid" Geese, a tem coined in the 70s or early 80s by James "Skip" Lazelle, PhD, (formerly associated with the MCZ at Harvard).
The latter are the Frankengeese unleashed by well meaning wildlife managers. They are a game farm mix of different canada goose races. Generally non migratory, they are the birds fouling beaches, parks, and golf courses. They are now the Rodney Dangerfield of geese, they can't get no respect. Nobody has complained too much about the goose gassing, assuming it is targeting the 'doids. But I have not heard which population acually made Capt Sully land in the drink. The Canadoids make a convenient target and meet the requirement to "do something". Like the intro of cane toads in Austrailia, kudzu in the south (we have some herre in NYC too) this is further proof of where the road paved with good intentions leads. BTW, over a hundred thousand gulls have been shot in NYC, most as they fly over JFK runways. Those of us involved in nature protection in here have not objected too much because if there is a serious plane crash at one of the NYC airports there will be calls for paving over all of Jamaica Bay and other quality habitats. But the science of hazard does not always fit the control actions. A simple drift fence should suffice to keep the terrapins off the runways.
