Dear Colleague

Please consider submitting an abstract to the AGU Fall Meeting's Biogeosciences
session B20,"Carbon Monitoring Systems".

We seek submissions that report efforts to monitor carbon stocks from
vegetation. We welcome studies that integrate
multiple tools (GIS, remote sensing, and field surveys) to scale up aboveground
as well as belowground carbon measurements.

We will provide a broad overview of the theme to highlight current challenges.
We are keen on hearing more about the lessons learned by members of academia,
government agencies, and NGOs.

Submissions from sites in data-poor, biomass-rich tropical countries are
encouraged but not required.

session, described below:

B20: Carbon Monitoring Systems
Sponsor: Biogeosciences (B)
Co-Sponsor(s): Global Environmental Change (GC)

Improved constrains on carbon emission models require that we estimate forest
carbon stocks at multiple scales. Furthermore, policies such as the UN-REDD
initiative require the development of regional or national carbon maps, carbon
monitoring systems and MRV methods. This session aims at assessing how carbon
monitoring systems can be operationalized at different scales. We encourage
submission on regional/national carbon stock and change estimation that
integrate remote sensing, ecosystem modeling and field measurements. In
particular, we encourage authors to describe their approaches in terms of (1)
biomass modeling and estimation, (2) error estimation and propagation and, (3)
relating regional to national/continental datasets.

Session sponsors: Temilola Fatoyinbo (NASA - Goddard Space Flight Center) and
Naiara Pinto (University of Maryland - Dept. Geography).
