Symposium Announcement: Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers February 24-28, 2012 New York City, New York www.aag.org/annualmeeting
Symposium Title: Land Use Change and Ecosystem Service Delivery Land-use and land-management decisions have significant impacts on the world’s ecosystems and the goods and services they provide. These goods and services, or ecosystem services, are of critical importance to human well-being. Efforts to improve our understanding of the relationships between land use and ecosystem service delivery would enhance our ability to predict changes in service provision from alternative land-use policy decisions. This is important in helping society understand the tradeoffs associated with land-use change, especially beyond those involving goods and services that are valued by markets (e.g., housing, agricultural and timber products, manufactured goods, etc.). This paper session will bring together researchers using geospatial methods and models to identify and predict how the provision of ecosystem services is affected by changes in land use or land management. We are particularly interested in papers that address the impacts of urbanization on ecosystem services or that seek to make this information applicable to land-use policy and decision making, but will consider papers in other areas as well. If you would like to participate, please send an email expressing your interest along with your AAG PIN from the conference website to Heather Sander ([email protected]) or Derric Pennington ([email protected]) after submitting your abstract.
