Seeking applications for a 3yr PhD assistantship to work collaboratively on a funded NASA research project focusing on quantifying biophysical and human recovery to extreme wildland fires at community and regional scales in the US northern Rockies. The PhD student will focus on using remote sensing to investigate recovery from extreme wildfires and research will likely include lab-based combustion experiments. The research could cover many aspects including, scaling up ecological response metrics, mapping of historical and current fires, and characterizing recovery vectors across semi-arid and forested ecosystems. MS or BS required in Geography, Ecology, Natural Resources, Remote Sensing / GIS, Environmental Sciences, or similar fields. Start date flexible but would prefer spring 2012. For information directly contact Dr Alistair Smith: [email protected].
